ORLANDO, Fla. (March 23, 2005) – Former Florida Supreme Court Justice Major B. Harding will join the Judges of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court for a Family Law Workshop on changing the way lawyers handle divorce cases.
“The Bounds of Advocacy” is a rules book designed to teach family law lawyers how to better work together on divorce cases to allow both parents to do what';s best for their children. The Orange County Bar Association Family Law Committee will sponsor the workshop.
Ninth Judicial Circuit Court Judges James C. Hauser, William C. Gridley, Margaret T. Waller, Reginald Whitehead, Bob Wattles and George Sprinkel IV and Seminole Circuit Judge Donna L. McIntosh will join Former Chief Justice Harding, who now practices law at firm in Tallahassee. The session will be discussion-oriented.
“I perceive that the goal for the Family Law system should be, if at all possible, to make the divorce work,” said Judge Hauser, who helped plan the workshop. “The best possible result for tragedy of divorce would be if mom and dad can work each other for sake of children. Resolve their differences and move forward.”
Family Law Attorney Richard West, who adapted the original rules for Florida lawyers from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, will present a power point presentation on “The Bounds of Advocacy” before Former Chief Justice Harding leads the discussion. Nearly 100 lawyers have registered to attend.
Major B. Harding graduated from Wake Forest University with his law degree in 1959 and took the bench as a Duval County Juvenile Court Judge in 1968. He became a Fourth Judicial Circuit Court Judge in 1970 and served until 1991 when he was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court. He served as chief justice from 1998-2000. He currently handles alternative dispute resolution and appellate work for Ausley & McMullen, P.A. in Tallahassee.
“We are pleased to have Justice Harding with us for this important ethics seminar,” said Orlando lawyer Karen Green, who helped plan the event. “This will be a thoughtful and interesting discussion.”
