Korean High Court Judges to Visit Orlando Courts on Monday
October 30, 2009
ORLANDO – Chief Judge Young Jin Ahn of the Busan High Court of Korea will meet next week with Judges of the Ninth Judicial Circuit to learn about jury trials and the American system of justice. Judge Ahn, along with a delegation 4 other judges, court administrative staff and court clerks from Korea will spend a full day Monday, November 2nd and a half day Tuesday, November 3rd witnessing jury trials and learning about courtroom procedures and the American judicial system.
The Republic of Korea just recently implemented a jury system as part of that country’s legal process. At the request of the Korean visitors, the National Center for State Courts in Williamsburg, Virginia coordinated the educational visit to focus primarily on jury trials. The Ninth Circuit was selected as a tour location based on the court’s model of best practices in jury trial procedures and jury management. This is the second time the National Center has brought international visitors to the Ninth Circuit. In 2004, a similar tour of Korean officials visited the court and later adopted many Ninth Circuit practices in the Republic of Korea.
Aside from witnessing actual courtroom proceedings, the Korean visitors will review Court Administration’s jury management process, remote court interpreting program and high tech courtroom. They will also have an opportunity to hold one-on-one discussions with various Ninth Circuit Judges about Florida Law and courtroom procedures.
